This year for Men’s Health Week, we’re shining a spotlight on fertility and giving you a few tips on how to reach your optimal fertility levels and increase both you and your partner’s ability to conceive.
According to IVF Australia, around one in six couples have difficulties getting pregnant. Of these, one-third of fertility issues are due to male infertility.
Here are five natural ways to boost male fertility before trying IVF.
Reduce harmful habits
Habits such as alcohol consumption and smoking may be wreaking havoc on your chances of conception. Heavy drinking may alter male sperm count, size, shape, motility and testosterone levels. Reducing your alcohol intake may be the solution not only for increasing your fertility but overall health. Try non-alcoholic health drinks such as Kombucha for a refreshing change that is sure to leave you with a healthy buzz!
Studies show that smoking is a harmful activity which can significantly impact sperm parameters and speed up the loss rate of eggs. Cutting back on smoking is highly beneficial for your health and fertility in both men and women.
Nourishment
Studies have shown that diets high in unsaturated fat, whole grains, vegetables and fish are associated with improved fertility rates. Diets rich in Omega-3 fatty acids such as salmon and walnuts and vitamin B12 in lean meats and dairy are shown to improve fertility levels and assist men to reach optimum sperm levels. Supplements such as Ubiquinol, the active form of CoQ10 (Coenzyme Q10) have also shown to protect sperm cells from damage and play a vital role in sperm cell energy production and motility. Limit Tech Usage
Despite its dominance in everyday life, there’s a chance your mobile usage could be doing more harm than good. Radiofrequency (RF) and radiation may negatively impact sperm quality in men by decreasing semen volume, sperm concentration, sperm count, motility and viability. Resting your laptop on your lap may also be detrimental in exposing yourself to more harmful RF. Try limiting the use of your mobile and computer or putting electronics on aeroplane mode at night to cut down on exposure to RF.
Pollution and toxin levels
Environmental toxins are important to consider when looking at potential infertility. Studies have shown that the worst fertility disruptors are organochlorine compounds, bisphenol A (BPA) and organophosphate pesticides and herbicides. Water and Airborne toxins can be lessened by a whole-house water filter, as well as having an air purifier. Opting for certified organic product and animal products can limit exposure to herbicides and pesticides, with a limit on tuna or large fish intake reducing metals like mercury. Cutting down on exposure to common toxins may help increase rates of conception.
Meaningful Activity
Happiness and meaningful activity can be beneficial not just for your mental and physical health, but also towards improving fertility. Studies suggest that reducing stress as well as working through difficulties is crucial for your mental wellbeing, happiness and fertility levels. Spending quality time with your partner, family and friends as well as a strong social support group can increase your moods and chances of conception.
