Mitochondria may sound like a mouthful – but it’s worth getting familiar with this important word.

That’s because mitochondria are essential components of the human body and their health is crucial for our own long-term health.

Your body is made up of some 37.2 trillion cells, and inside these cells are mitochondria.

They help turn the energy you take from food into energy that the cell can use. 

In fact, mitochondria produce about 90 per cent of the energy your cells need to survive.
