Tips for a Heart-Healthy Year

I’m sure it’s hard to believe that we’re already over a month into 2019.  If you’ve been struggling to focus on those New Year’s Resolutions you set in January, don’t stress, why not refocus and give it a go now? We are here to give you our top tips for a heart-healthy 2019. Our hearts are very important, so why not give them all the love they deserve.

  1. It’s time to embrace Turmeric

Turmeric is an ancient spice which has powerful anti-inflammatory properties. Many experts believe it can be effective in assisting with the reduction of inflammation in the joints. Recent studies have also shown turmeric’s properties for promoting heart health. One study, which was conducted in Japan, found that curcumin, which is what gives turmeric that yellow colour, considerably improved heart health over a three-week period[i]. Why not sprinkle some turmeric into your tea, porridge or smoothie each morning to subtly add it into your diet?

  1. Try some Ubiquinol

Ubiquinol is the active from of CoQ10, a very powerful antioxidant found naturally in the body. As we age our levels of CoQ10 deteriorate naturally, and it is ubiquinol supplements that can help to support your energy levels. Research has also shown that Ubiquinol supports healthy heart function, as well as in some cases reducing the common muscle pain and tension that people experience when taking statins for cholesterol management. If you are over 50 and have been taking statins to manage your cholesterol, it may be worth heading into see your healthcare practitioner to discuss Ubiquinol.

  1. Eat more fish

Many people do not eat enough fish per week. A well rounded diet recommends 2-3 servings of fish per week. Without this we are missing out on beneficial omega-3 fatty acids, which have been shown to support heart health as well as reducing inflammation in the body, in particular the joints.

  1. Get yourself moving

We truly believe the best medicine for the majority of health problems is to get yourself moving. It may seem simple, but the benefits of exercise stretch far beyond keeping your weight in check – it also strengthens your heart. If doing some solid exercise seems like too much to handle, why not take a short 5-minute break at work every hour and go for a walk around the office, by the end of the day you would have made up a whole half hour of exercise! Easy!
