If you’re confused about whether you should be taking Coenzyme Q10 or Ubiquinol, we’re here to help you discover the benefits of each.
What does Coenzyme Q10 do?
Every day our body is confronted by free radicals, from pollution, a poor diet and various environmental factors. These free radicals cause our body to age and may also contribute to poor health and a compromised immune system.
Which is where Coenzyme Q10 (or CoQ10) comes in. CoQ10 is an antioxidant which is used to produce energy within every cell in your body. It helps to protect against these free radicals and support the immune system and increase its ability to fight illness.
CoQ10’s main benefit is to the heart. A randomised, double-blind trial found that CoQ10 improves heart health, and could reduce the risk of dying from heart-related diseases by almost half.[i]
Where you find it?
Meat such as heart, liver and kidney, beef, fish, and vegetables, including peanuts, spinach, broccoli and cauliflower.
What does Ubiquinol do?
There’s no denying that CoQ10 is beneficial. But its bigger, better and brighter sibling, Ubiquinol could be a more effective way to improve your antioxidant levels. Ubiquinol is an active form of the naturally-occurring antioxidant CoQ10 and is more easily absorbed in the body than CoQ10. It has also been shown to help maintain a healthy heart and LDL cholesterol levels. Ubiquinol may also help reduce muscle pain by up to 54 per cent and muscle weakness by 44 per cent.[ii]
If you’re over the age of 25, you should be including an Ubiquinol supplement into your daily health regime, as your body doesn’t convert CoQ10 into Ubiquinol as easily as you age.
If your cholesterol levels are high, you may be taking statin medication.[iii] Talk to your GP about including an Ubiquinol supplement to counteract the damage which can occur from this medication, as statins reduce your store of CoQ10.
Talk to your GP or local pharmacist for some advice on taking Ubiquinol, particularly if you take statin medication.
